Poultry producers and processors can no longer release waste and wastewater in dumps, lagoons or open water.

 

 

 

 


They have to invest in technologies to treat waste so it will not cause damage to the environment. These investments do not have to be an expensive addition to production costs. New technologies can make waste a source of extra income.

Today waste can reduce costs and be a money maker

For many years the Dutch poultry industry is facing rigid environment laws. That made producers looking for manners to minimize the environmental impact of their operation. They initiated the development of technologies that can convert waste into profit. Litter is converted into fertilizers. Wastewater from processing plants is cleaned to drinking water quality and the remaining chemicals and solids are transformed into reusable products.

Sustainable water use
Water is a critical resource in the poultry (processing) industry.  Its availability is sometimes limited and its quality questionable. Adding this to the increasingly demanding environmental requirements one can understand the demand  for new technologies and working practices to create a more sustainable way of operating the plant.

The Dutch company Nijhuis Industries recognized that sustainable water use and resource recovery can turn cost centers into profit centers and create profit out of wastewater, process water and waste. With their solution poultry companies will meet the increasingly demanding sustainability requirements, lower the environmental footprint, combine productivity and energy efficiency and reduce life cycle cost at the same time.

Cedrob: A state of art example
Cedrob is a Polish meat supplier and one of the largest in Europe. Next to operating 3 slaughterhouses with a total capacity of 150.000.000 broilers and 900.000 geese per year, they are also hatching 160.000.000 eggs and producing 720.000 tons of feed per year. The company has sustainable environmental ambitions and strives to be energy-self-sufficient. They asked Nijhuis Industries to be their total solution provider, taking care of technological & civil designs, equipment supply and installation & commissioning of the complete wastewater treatment and biogas plant.

The wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is designed to treat different types of wastewater from Cedrobs biggest and newest slaughterhouse and can also handle wastewater off-site. The WWTP includes a wide scope of Nijhuis technologies varying from filter systems, coagulation & flocculation, flotation and also a biological treatment system up to river water discharge standards. 
The biogas plant is an integral part of the complete scheme. Biological excess sludge from the WWTP, sludge from primary DAF treatment, as well as sludge transported from off-site plants, are pre-treated and digested in the Nijhuis Taurus Reactors. The digested sludge is dewatered to be used as fertilizer providing economic value to Cedrob. The biogas produced is optimized by a desulfurization step inside the digester and finalized in special scrubbers in order to obtain the required gas quality for use in CHP (Combined Heat and Power) units. It is being used to produce and secure heat and electricity for the WWTP, biogas plant and slaughterhouse.
